Why Black Friday moves: because Thanksgiving is pinned to a weekday rather than a date, it drifts between November 22 and 28. Black Friday therefore lands between November 23 and 29, and Cyber Monday between November 26 and December 2.

How the fourth-Thursday rule came about

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863, set for the last Thursday of November, and presidents kept issuing annual proclamations after that. In 1939, a year with five Thursdays in November, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday a week earlier to lengthen the Christmas shopping season β€” a change critics nicknamed "Franksgiving," and which not every state followed. Congress settled the matter with a joint resolution, signed by Roosevelt on December 26, 1941, that fixed Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday of November from 1942 on.

Where the shopping-day names come from

  • Black Friday β€” Philadelphia police used the term in the 1950s and 1960s for the gridlock of shoppers and visitors the day after Thanksgiving (the Army–Navy football game was often played in the city that weekend). The popular explanation that it is the day retailers go "into the black" came later.
  • Small Business Saturday β€” launched by American Express in 2010 to encourage shopping at independent local businesses.
  • Cyber Monday β€” coined in 2005 by Shop.org, part of the US National Retail Federation, for the online sales day after the holiday weekend.
  • Giving Tuesday (GivingTuesday) β€” started in 2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y with the United Nations Foundation as a day for charitable giving.

Thanksgiving in other countries

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October β€” October 12 in 2026. Japan's Labor Thanksgiving Day (Kinrō Kansha no Hi) is a fixed public holiday on November 23. Several other places hold harvest-thanksgiving days of their own, but the late-November long weekend and the shopping days that follow it are a US tradition, since copied by retailers around the world.

Planning around the long weekend

  • Book Thanksgiving travel early: the Wednesday before and the Sunday after are traditionally among the busiest travel days in the US.
  • For Black Friday shopping, write your list and budget before the ads start, and compare prices in advance β€” "doorbuster" pricing is not always the lowest price of the season.
  • If you work in retail, e-commerce or support, treat the week of Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday as a fixed deadline in your Q4 plan.
