Super Typhoon Haiyan Strikes Philippines

One of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded made landfall in the Philippines with sustained winds of 195 mph. Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) caused catastrophic destruction, killing over 6,300 people and displacing millions. The city of Tacloban was devastated by a massive storm surge, making it one of the deadliest Philippine typhoons in history.

John F. Kennedy Elected President

At 43, John F. Kennedy became the youngest person elected president and the first Catholic to hold the office, narrowly defeating Vice President Richard Nixon. The razor-thin victory (113,000 votes out of 68 million cast) was aided by the first televised presidential debates. Kennedy's presidency would inspire a generation before his assassination in 1963.

Beer Hall Putsch Begins

Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party attempted to seize power in Munich through a failed coup d'état. The putsch collapsed the next day when police opened fire on Nazi marchers, killing 16. Hitler was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison (serving only nine months), during which he wrote "Mein Kampf." The failed coup became a rallying point for the Nazi movement.
