Guy Fawkes Day & Bonfire Night

Britain's most explosive celebration commemorates the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic conspirators aimed to assassinate Protestant King James I, but the plot was foiled. Parliament declared November 5th a day of thanksgiving, celebrated with bonfires, fireworks, and burning effigies.

📜

The Famous Rhyme

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot." This traditional verse has been passed down through generations since 1605. While originally celebrating the King's survival, modern celebrations have shed their anti-Catholic sentiment and focus on community festivities.

🎭

Cultural Icon

Guy Fawkes evolved from villain to anti-establishment symbol. The stylized Guy Fawkes mask, popularized by the graphic novel "V for Vendetta" (1982), became an icon of protest movements worldwide. Today's celebrations feature spectacular firework displays, bonfire parties, and traditional foods like toffee apples and parkin cake.

1605

The Gunpowder Plot Foiled

Guy Fawkes was arrested in the cellars beneath Parliament after authorities received an anonymous tip. Though often portrayed as the plot's leader, Fawkes was actually recruited by Robert Catesby, the true mastermind. Under torture, Fawkes revealed his co-conspirators' names. He was executed in January 1606, but his name became forever linked to this dramatic moment in British history.

1940

Franklin D. Roosevelt Elected to Third Term

FDR became the first (and only) U.S. president elected to a third term, defeating Republican Wendell Willkie. Breaking the two-term tradition established by George Washington, Roosevelt argued the nation needed continuity of leadership as World War II engulfed Europe. He would win a fourth term in 1944 before dying in office in April 1945.

1912

Woodrow Wilson Elected President

Democrat Woodrow Wilson won a landslide victory in the presidential election, benefiting from a split Republican Party. Former President Theodore Roosevelt's third-party "Bull Moose" candidacy divided Republican votes, allowing Wilson to win with just 42% of the popular vote. Wilson would lead America through World War I and champion the League of Nations.
