Brazil Republic Day (1889)

On November 15, 1889, Brazil transitioned from monarchy to republic when Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca led a military coup that deposed Emperor Pedro II. This bloodless revolution established the Republic of the United States of Brazil (later renamed the Federative Republic of Brazil). The day is celebrated annually as Proclamation of the Republic Day, a national holiday honoring Brazil's democratic transformation and the end of 67 years of imperial rule under the House of Braganza.

International Day of Peace and Understanding

November 15th holds significance in promoting global peace and cooperation. The date marks the first assembly of the League of Nations in 1920, humanity's first major attempt at creating an international organization dedicated to maintaining world peace after World War I. Though the League ultimately failed to prevent World War II, it laid the groundwork for the United Nations and modern international diplomacy, representing the enduring human aspiration for peaceful coexistence.

Brazil Becomes a Republic

Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed Brazil a republic, ending the monarchy of Emperor Pedro II in a peaceful coup d'état. The aging emperor, beloved by many Brazilians, accepted his deposition without resistance and went into exile in Europe. This transition transformed South America's largest nation from the Empire of Brazil into a federal republic modeled after the United States, establishing a presidential system that, despite various forms and interruptions, continues today.

1926

NBC Radio Network Founded

The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) was established by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), becoming America's first major broadcast network. Initially a radio network, NBC pioneered network broadcasting by linking stations across the country, allowing simultaneous transmission of programs to millions of listeners. NBC would later transition to television in the 1940s, becoming one of the "Big Three" television networks that dominated American broadcasting for decades.

1777

Articles of Confederation Adopted

The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, America's first constitution establishing a confederation of sovereign states with a weak central government. Though not ratified until 1781, this document governed the United States during the Revolutionary War and early independence. Its weaknesses—including inability to levy taxes or regulate commerce—eventually led to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the creation of the stronger federal system under the U.S. Constitution.
