Claude Monet Born (1840)

Born Oscar-Claude Monet on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France, he became the founder and most influential practitioner of French Impressionism. His dedication to capturing light and natural forms revolutionized art. From his early caricatures in Le Havre to his monumental Water Lilies series at Giverny, Monet's 86-year life (1840-1926) was devoted to painting nature's ephemeral beauty. He died on December 5, 1926, leaving behind a legacy that transformed modern art.

Birth of Impressionism

Monet's 1872 painting "Impression, Sunrise" gave the Impressionist movement its name. When exhibited at the 1874 First Impressionist Exhibition, art critic Louis Leroy mockingly used the term "Impressionist," which the artists embraced. This revolutionary approach emphasized visible brushstrokes, open composition, and the accurate depiction of light and its changing qualities. Monet's technique fundamentally changed how artists perceived and represented the natural world.

Water Lilies and Giverny Gardens

In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny, where he created his famous water garden featuring a Japanese bridge and water lilies. This garden became his greatest masterpiece and primary subject for the last 30 years of his life. His Water Lilies series comprises approximately 250 oil paintings, with some panels stretching over 6 feet tall and 14 feet wide. These works are considered precursors to Abstract Expressionism and remain among the most celebrated paintings in art history.
